Fall Creek Watershed Committee Minutes
May 3, 2001

Present: Sharon Anderson, Yvette deBoer, Geof Eckersen, Bob Fahey, Larry Fisher, Evan Grant, Deb Grantham, Kate Hackett, Mary Hegarty, Roxy Johnston, Phil Koons, Jim Lassoie, Beth Lawrence, Jeanette LeBoyer, Katie Medwar, Steve Penningroth, Ruth Sherman, Ken Woodman,

Cornell student reported on their proposals

  1. History of Fall Creek: Bob Fahey has brought together photos, maps and other historical records from a variety of sources including DeWitt historical Society, Olin Map library, and the Web. The photos and maps will get put on the Web in chronological order

  2. Biological Diversity - Evan Grant and Beth Lawrence. Who had data on biological data, GIS data including maps and species lists. Their search promoted professor in Soil Crop Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell to compile Fall Creek data. Map with political boundaries, land use map, roads with state land and natural areas (e.g. Plantations and hiking trails), wetlands. They compiled a species lists. Poster with map of Fall Creek watershed with natural areas and directions. The mammal data is supposed based on habitat from the GAP analysis program.

  3. Katie Medwar has been involved with education and outreach – Earth day, Boyton Middle school Eco-Region project for 6th graders, assisted with Water week organizing and will staff a display there. Will compile contacts and resources for future class efforts.

  4. Jeannie LeBoyer worked with septic system awareness. Using a packet of materials from CCE. Jeannie worked on a 3-fold brochure. See received GIS data from David Zorn to show delineation of who has septic systems 3532 households on septic systems. She will layover with streams and roads. She will have the 3 fold flyer at Water Week.

  5. Geof Eckereen made a flyer on fishing in Fall Creek.

Water Week

  1. May 9 Center Ithaca 9:00-3:00. In the TCCC hallway will be space for the Cornell presentation and additional 8 foot table for Fall Creek Watershed. Items for the table -- Mary currently has the maps of Fall Creek. Mary can set up. Sharon can watch the table from 9:00-12:30, Joyce 12:30-3:00 and do take down. Mary can store the maps on an ongoing basis.

  2. Yvette drafted a brochure for FCWC.

Fall Creek Stevens Road –

had a large Davis road crosses above McLean. Someone appears to be using the area as waste disposal. Lake Como Assoc has already done the area from Lake Como to below McLean at the first road crossing this side of McLean. They will continue through next weekend.

To old railroad tressle at Freeville. Of all the places the 366 crossing near McLean. They used the bags that are used for can recycling and doubled them. Wear gloves!!! Ken has been amazed at the junk. Ken had gotten area businesses to let him use their dumpster.

Month of May at town highway garage has a dumpster for scrap metal.
Wallace Steel has donated the dumpster.

Is there a group assigned to Freeville, let Ken know how far about above Freeville.

Water monitoring sub committee report. Will sample in conjunction with Pat Reidy’s Virgil creek matching the parameters, and timing. Five key Sites were similar with one exception. They want to do 12 sites. If there are great differences between locations then will look at samples in between.. Ideally would be good to do additional

The committee wants to tour Fall Creek by the creek all the way to Lake Como. May 31 to look for physical concerns. Phil has some photos during a weekend of high runoff. Meet at Yvette’s 4:00, 305 East Lincoln.

Possible intern for erosion control demo project

Sonya interested even if no funding. Sharon will supervise but would need support of the committee. EMC is looking for 15-20 hours per week. $8.00per hour.

Lake Como has its annual meeting and committee meetings June 2. July would be a good time to host a meeting.
